Finding new rhythms

The last month or so has been interesting. After being sick for so long, the end of school coming around and all that goes with that, photography business picking up again, I’m having a tough time finding a new rhythm in my life right now that includes this blog and a few other things I enjoy. No, don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining in the least. My life is wonderful, but getting the balance right can be challenging.

And now that I’m doing both knitting and crochet and not so focused on one or the other, I find that I like the rhythm of going back and forth between the two to change things up. This post will show that….

First, the teacher gift. The blue scarf I started just didn’t turn out well. It was a good idea with a poor execution. My chains just didn’t match between the beginning and the end. Toward the end, it was tight, even and pretty. The first few rows were uneven and ugly. And blocking didn’t help. But it was a learning experience!!

So I did a little switcheroo. I started another scarf about the middle of that and intended it for Sammie’s teacher. But after working, I realized I had something else that Sammie LOVED for her teacher so I gave Ellie’s teacher the second scarf. Frankly, I fell in love with it and the yarn…. It’s Classic Elite Yarns – their Alpaca Sox. Such amazing colors!!

colors

I fell in love with the colors in this! I bet it would be gorgeous as socks!

mess ups

I have to admit *shhhh* I messed up on this scarf twice before I noticed I'd decreased two squares! So I just went with it and kept it up. I liked the end result of an asymmetrical scarf! You?

The gift for Sammie’s teacher is this little bag. I have several – one I use for knitting and crochet on the go, another for toiletries, another small one for the girls when traveling. I just LOVE it!! Sammie picked this as her teacher gift. These are easy to make and don’t take that long if you can sew a straight line. I hope to make some more as “just in case” gifts this summer.

butterflies

I love the surprise of butterflies inside it! Mine is blue with bright orange stripes inside. I love it!

toiletries

This one is a great size for a few random toiletries and it hangs on the door! My mom taught me how to make it and I love it!

Socks. Washed and finished pink ones, halfway done second blue one. And I consolidated it to one picture just so you can skip past it faster. LOL!

socks

I think I need a new pattern for the next one! Must switch things up....

And finally, I finished my friend’s hat a week or two ago! I’m hoping to get it in the mail on Monday and I truly hope she loves it! I also realized, after measuring my head, that her head is petite compared to mine! LOL! But I know it’ll still be fab on her.

She requested a black hat with black flowers and I added on the buttons to change it up a bit. Each button has a different colored back button – and it’s easy to make more. One is black , as she requested, but I love the pop of hot pink! And she can take them off and switch them up as much as she’d like. Still love this pattern!

hat

Isn't that pink center on that black flower FAB? (The pink is better in person. Black is hard to shoot!)

flowers

And the flowers can be done together or separately. Even put two on there in different spots! Fun....

Just the little black flower....

Since I won’t have the girls in things much this summer, I suspect I’ll be a little slow at the blog. I’m going to try to get past my mental block on posting iPhone crochet/knitting/crafting photos so I can be a little more prolific. But being a photographer, they have to be decent photos so we’ll see how it goes!

But I know this summer will be about finding new rhythms. And I know it’ll be good no matter what.

Under this lump is a sick child

And until she’s feeling better, I won’t be posting. Uncomfortable, sad child means tired momma.

Well, Ellie has broken another bone!

Yup. For those of you that are new, Ellie broke her femur 2 years ago when she was hit by a snowboard. (Actually, he’s a wonderful guy! Totally silly mistake and everyone is fine now.)

Yesterday we were visiting my sis-in-law, her hubby and new little boy as well as their friends that are in town visiting. Ellie and Sammie decided to head upstairs. About 5 minutes later there’s a thump (not that shocking) and Sammie is yelling, “Ellie is hurt! Ellie is hurt!”

I rush up to find her in the middle of the bedroom floor holding her wrist.

After taking her to our chiropractor since it didn’t immediately seem broken, she agreed, set a small bone that was out of place and Ellie and I headed home. I wrapped up her wrist and ended up pulling her into my bed. Only she was very uncomfortable all night.

So this morning it was off to the orthopedic doctor. And sure enough, it’s a small buckle fracture – not broken through, it’s almost like it’s bent instead of broken. Very common and heals VERY quickly, thank goodness!

Monday we go in for a new cast… But in the meantime, she’s VERY proud and in GREAT spirits and will tell you all about it several times. “See, I was standing on an exercise ball in the shower stall and I fell and hit my hand on the bench!”

Obviously, this activity wasn’t mother approved. 😉

So proud! I think she loves the attention. (And yes, she's right handed.)

Meditative Monday: Gratuitous Kid Photo

Breakfast for dinner

Breakfast for dinner

Yesterday was my birthday (yes, I’m 29. Again.) and my girls made me breakfast for dinner. Ellie’s specialty – scrambled eggs. Sammie’s delightful creation – cookie toast (recipe: butter, honey and sprinkles of all colors). I have to say, it was one of the best breakfasts for dinners I’ve ever had!

These times of caring and love make my heart sing! This was definitely one of my best birthday weekends ever….

amber necklace

The amber necklace I got from my family. *love* (I'm wearing the earrings....)

What to meditate on from this? Appreciating all the little – and big – things in your life. Sure it’s cliche, but true. What are you thankful for today?

My failed attempt at escaping the snow temporarily

This week is Winter Break for the kids. So we decided to head out of town and visit Nana, Papa, Grandma Judy and Grampa Tom. After packing up the car and trying to get on the road, we finally headed out of CB about 1.5 hours later than planned. This turned into a 2 hour delay when getting food in Gunnison proved to be a little slower than planned.

Snow in Gunnison

But finally, we were leaving and on our way to the Springs!

Until I got pulled over for not having a front license plate. (It got torn off and swept away when we crossed Slate River when it was higher than usual.) No problem, we were just getting a warning. *whew*

The state trooper headed back to the car 15 minutes later with two pieces of paper – and no drivers license. Turns out he had on record that I had failed to pay a ticket last year and needed to keep it. (Long story short, it was a clerical error. I need to head back to Gunnison in a few days to get a new one – when they open back up.)

So to let the girls out of the car after a 2 hour trip to nowhere, we stopped at the park in Gunni. In spite of the light snow cover on the ground, they had a blast until a potty break was needed. (No bathrooms were open there because it’s winter.)

All in all, a well needed break from the 4’+ in our front yard! Not quite the plans, but we still had fun anyway. Next time we have a school break, I’m hoping we can break from from the snow for at least a few days!

Small children leaping from tall buildings

Fun at the neighbors house. I remember getting in trouble for doing this off our shed when I was a kid.

A quick introduction

I suppose I should introduce myself a little better, but for now you’ll have to just be happy meeting my girls. They are both goofy, silly, happy, sweet and kind. You know, the same way everyone else describes their kids! Only I’m telling the truth. 😉

Ellie

This is Ellie. My creative, sensitive, caring little ray of sunshine.

Sammie

This is Sammie, my goofy, spirited, adorable little love!

I’m not sure how much I’ll be posting about them, but I thought it might be nice to give you a face to the names!

Both photos taken with my 5D Mark II. Probably my 50mm lens.
